She set out to create one thousand origami cranes when she found out she had just a short time left in her life—the result of monstrous destruction and conflict. Sadako passed away at age twelve from leukemia as the result of exposure to an atom bomb, but her determination ended with 644 cranes. Her classmates continued her dream of peace, completing the rest of the 1,000 cranes in her memory.
